Conclusion "Our study demonstrates that healthy centenarians are characterized by increased serum irisin levels, whereas levels of this molecule were found to be significantly lower in young patients with myocardial infarction", the Spanish researchers wrote. "Altogether, our data indicate that circulating irisin levels may be significantly associated with successful aging and could serve as a potential vascular risk marker...
"However, further mechanistic studies are required to investigate whether irisin could act as a protective factor for the development of cardiovascular disease and age-related disorders. We speculate that the high irisin levels observed in our centenarians may reflect successful aging because this sample was actually disease free."
Muscle stem cell aging: identifying ways to induce tissue rejuvenation
ZitatHighlights
•The skeletal muscle stem cell provides an example of the integrated nature of the diverse biological processes underlying stem cell aging.
•Metabolic, proteostatic, genomic and epigenetic mechanisms are used by muscle stem cells to cope with the stress signals that coordinate their activity.
•Aging disrupts the integrity of these diverse mechanisms and their coordinated regulation, leading to age-related loss of stem cell function.
•Recent rejuvenating interventions benefit muscle stem-cell functions through a combinatorial action on intrinsic stem-cell pathways and on the stem cell-supporting environment.
Plasma irisin levels predict telomere length in healthy adults
ZitatIrisin, a newly described hormone released from skeletal muscles after exercise, may induce CR-like effects by increasing adipose tissue energy expenditure. (...) Multiple regression analysis using backward elimination revealed that relative telomere length can be predicted by age (...) and plasma irisin levels (...). These data support the view that irisin may have a role in the modulation of both energy balance and the ageing process.
Irisin enhances longevity by boosting SIRT1, AMPK, autophagy and telomerase
ZitatIn conclusion, irisin is a key player during the ageing process and it could be a novel target molecule for the therapeutic approach to boost longevity pathways.
Role of Irisin in Myocardial Infarction, Heart Failure, and Cardiac Hypertrophy
ZitatIrisin affects blood pressure and controls hypertension through modulating vasodilatation. Moreover, irisin can enhance vasoconstriction via the hypothalamus. Because of these dual effects of irisin on cardiovascular physiology, irisin can be a critical therapeutic target in cardiovascular diseases.
Irisin ameliorates age‐associated sarcopenia and metabolic dysfunction
ZitatWe then delivered recombinant irisin protein intraperitoneally into ageing or aged mice and found that it could improve sarcopenia with grip strength (+18.42%, P < 0.01 or +13.88%, P < 0.01), muscle weights (QU: +9.02%, P < 0.01 or +16.39%, P < 0.05), fibre size (QU: both P < 0.05) and molecular phenotypes and alleviated age‐associated fat tissues expansion, insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis (all P < 0.05), accompanied with altered gene signatures.
Short Peptides and Telomere Length Regulator Hormone Irisin
ZitatThe data suggest that the immunomodulatory peptide Lys-Glu and neuroprotective peptide Glu-Asp-Arg modulate the life span by modulating irisin gene expression.
